My study of storge (the love between parent and child) led me to focus on the relationship between mother and child. A bond and a position that is irreplaceable in any one person’s life. A connection that can’t even be put into words - these relationships bring out the most selfless and generous sides to any of us. The most sacred relationship we humans have, the beings that brought us all into this world, the foundation of life, Mothers.

‘Definition of a woman

When our problems was takin over you brought us from us from under

As a youngin’ you always told me I wouldn’t need for nothin’’ - Lil Herb “Mamma Im Sorry”

I wanted to celebrate my own mother with the painting, ‘Dear Mama’, however with this written piece I wanted to extend the praise to all mothers and also all aspiring mothers to be.

Often unappreciated but consistently present. The modern mother works full time and still finds time to raise her kids. A full time role that requires the upmost focus and determination - the natural sense of duty and protection that is imbedded in women blossoms in to the pure feeling that is a mother’s love.

‘You know all them times I had you up late worry about me

Mamma I’m sorry

I aint never get to tell you I apologise

Mamma im sorry

You know all them nights you calling’ my phone no answer

Mamma im sorry’ - Lil Herb “Mamma Im Sorry”

This piece is a bit of therapy for me as its a chance to say thank you, sorry and celebrate my mother all in one go!

‘Now I feel like there's things I gotta get, things I gotta do

Just to prove to you, you was getting through

Can the choir please, gimme a verse of you, eyes so beautiful, to me,’

Kanye West - Hey Mama

Growing up I never wanted or needed anything that wasn’t already provided, but I was selfish and always wanted to do my own thing. But as I’ve grown and matured I understand the sacrifices my mother made - hence the subtle halo and angel wing I included within the painting to signify her unconditional love which is only comparable to the love of God.

‘Hey mama, I want to scream so loud for you

'Cause I'm so proud of you, let me tell you what I'm about to do

I know I act a fool, but I promise you I'm going back to school

I appreciate that you alive for me, I just want you to be proud of me’ Kanye West - Hey Mama

As I painted this piece I wanted to focus on the colours and vibrancy of life - the life my mother created for me. The artist I was researching was Pablo Picasso - I like the abstract feel of his work so I incorporated a similar style in the painting. Further inspiration came from two of my favourite rappers, G Herbo (Lil Herb) and Kanye West, which is why I have placed some memorable lines throughout this post from the songs that have inspired me the most.

As I close this post, I want to take the time out to pray for mothers who have died or have been unable to fulfil there duties as mothers, you are still appreciated.

Key words - love - mothers - sacrifice - appreciate - unconditional
